the best.

the best writing creates a world that the reader never wants to leave.
a world where the reader becomes so immersed in the emotions of the characters, a world where every hurt of the characters makes the reader cry out in pain.

the best writing is an escape from this world. an escape from this painful reality. an escape to define what exactly we could have if we were given the power to paint our heart's truest desires.

edit:
as blenderlid kindly pointed out to me, it doesn't really make sense that an escape from a painful reality would have pain in it. okay. yes. correct. but... what's life without pain, right? it's those terrible moments that make you appreciate the good ones that much more. without evil, there cannot exist a good. but a Good can exist after you've experienced evil.

and i should probably tell y'all what inspired all of this.

my guilty pleasure is supernatural fanfiction. yes. that's right. fanfiction. and to be honest with y'all, that's probably where i got all my practice from--writing fanfic. not for supernatural (because i don't know their canon well enough), but for other things. psych, primarily (surprise, surprise, right?). if you are interested in seeing exactly why it's the best friggin' thing i've ever read... well here (brace yourselves for a HUGE emotional roller coaster if you plan to read these all at once. some of them are as of yet unfinished. mainly saving grace.):

supernatural:
named (warnings: slash, blasphemy, HECKA ANGST MY GOOD LORD)
thursday's child (warnings: slash, blasphemy, OH MY GOODNESS THE BEST EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER EVER ALTHOUGH TRY NOT TO GET TOO BURNT OUT)
saving grace (warnings: slash, blasphemy, HUMAN NEED MY GOODNESS)

psych:
honesty is the best policy (warnings: slash, ANGST MY GOOD PEOPLE [catching on to the pattern?])
telling tales (warnings: slash, angst, yeah.)

  1. Ooh, powerful - but I feel the need to ask that if the best writing was truly an escape from this painful reality, wouldn't it be free of the hurt of the characters that makes the reader cry out in pain? :33333

  2. Sometimes in real life, sad things seem ugly and pointless. But sometimes, in good writing, the tragic can be made to look beautiful and interesting, and thus can be an escape.
